Recommendations vs. Prescriptions: What’s the Difference?

A common question we hear from new patients is: “Why did my doctor write a recommendation instead of a prescription?”

The reason comes down to federal law. Because cannabis remains classified as a Schedule I substance federally, traditional medical prescriptions are legally prohibited. Instead, state-certified medical marijuana physicians issue a recommendation.

This recommendation specifies the routes of administration (such as oral, inhalation, or smoking) and details the safe dosing limits authorized for your treatment. You can then take this recommendation to any licensed marijuana dispensary in Florida to purchase your medicine.

Understanding Your Florida Possession & Purchasing Limits

Florida limits your purchases based on the method of consumption. Under state guidelines, a physician can issue a certification for up to three 70-day supply limits of medical marijuana, or up to six 35-day supply limits for smokable flower.

How Do “Rolling Limits” Work?

One of the most confusing aspects of Florida’s system is the rolling limit.

Florida does not reset your allotment on the first of every month. Instead, the system looks backward dynamically:

• For Smokable Flower: The state looks back 35 days from the exact date of your attempted purchase. Any flower you bought during those previous 35 days counts against your 2.5-ounce limit.
• For Non-Smokable Products: The state looks back 70 days from the exact date of purchase. Any milligrams of THC you bought in those categories over the last 70 days subtract from your available limit.

Example: If you buy 1 ounce of flower on day 1 and another 1.5 ounces on day 10, you have used your full 2.5-ounce allotment. You will not be able to buy more flower until day 36, when the first 1 ounce you bought “rolls off” your 35-day window and becomes available to purchase again.

What If Your Limits Aren’t Enough? (Request for Exception)

Every patient’s endocannabinoid system is unique, and some individuals require higher doses to find relief from qualifying medical conditions like chronic pain, PTSD, or MS.
